Mobile payment systems in Malaysia: Its potentials and consumers' adoption strategies

Mobile Payment is paying for goods, services or bills with a mobile devices such as mobile phone, Personal Digital Assistant (PDA), or other devices. The phone network can be used solely as the channel to authenticate the customers, or the payment can involve a debit to an account held by the customer with the mobile operator or other services provider.
In Malaysia, they are several service providers which are:
Mobile Wallet is enables it networks of users to make payment to any Mobile Wallet's appointed network of merchants to accept MW points.
Mobile Money unlocks the power of the mobile to make payments at anytime, anywhere using only a mobile phone coupled with 6-digit security PIN via SMS.
SCAN's Mobile Payment System(MPS) is designed and built by SCAN, the leading ICT Security Solution Provider where the payment can make via mobile network coverage for sending or receiving SMS.
Maxis Communication Bhd in collaborations with Nokia,Visa, Maybank and Touch 'n Go has launched Maxis Fast Tap, an integrated mobile payment services that utilises Near Field Communication (NFC).
Potential of Mobile Payment and consumers' adoption strategies
In Malaysia, 88% of the Malaysian population subscribing to mobile services. With a huge amount of mobile phone subscribers in Malaysia, there are opportunities to accelerate the migration to electronic payments. It also support with the banking system in Malaysia has 55 million deposit accounts. The high percentage of mobile phone subscriber and the high rate of participation of the population in the banking system are important pre-conditions for significant use of mobile payment.

Mobile payment increase operational efficiency and improve productivity levels through expedient payments and receipts of funds. It speed up the payment process and convenience of making payments from any places or time. It also reduce costs through the reduction or redeployment of resources used for handling cash and cheques.

For example, Visa launched the Visa payments services for point-of-sales transaction via NFC. In Malaysia, this service is provide under Maxis Fast Tap. Maybank Visa holders need to download theirs Visa payWave credit account details to their Nokia 6212 handset over the Maxis wireless network. The user can begin make purchases at any merchant outlets which accept Visa payWave once the account has been personalised in phone. For any successful transaction, the purchases amount will appear in the consumer's credit card statement.Beside that, the Touch 'n Go services allow the user to pay for metropolitan transit system, bus terminals, highways toll, car parks and more.

The following services provider are mainly using SMS to make a payment. With the payment via SMS, the user can easily do the transaction in anywhere and being secure with the security PIN number.

With SCAN's Mobile Payment, the users no need to login to the online banking sites. The users can transfer money, pay bills, meals or taxi rides as long as both parties have mobile phones and bank accounts.

Another mobile solutions provider Com2U Sdn Bhd gas launched 'moneyMe' which allow a mobile subscribers of Maxis,Digi and Celcom to securely transfer money within Malaysia and to Indonesia. The service allows instant money transfer using SMS and not requires registration and subscription fees.

The mobile wallet able the users paid bills such like phone bills, utility bills and education fees. It provide MW KIOSK services to reload the mobile wallet. It provide the user to set out the monthly expenses and e-reload the mobile immediately.

To adopt more consumers, the company should ensure the users have clear image on how the mobile payment take place when making payment. Before the users sign up the facility, the provider should explain clearly to consumers. The users also had to frequently check their account balance.

The mobile payment service providers must provide a secure payment process to make sure all the transaction is paid to authorise person. This problem might occur when the consumer lost his phone and make fraud payments before the owner notice. How this problem to be solve and who are being responsible. The company should develop solutions when this problem occur.

To attract more users, the mobile payment company should collaborate with more merchant or bank. This will convenience the users to make payment any merchant shop and reload at any bank. As the result, it will increase more users to sign up the facilities. The company can also having some reward to their consumers as they sign up the services and provide some bonus point to each money they consume.

In my opinion, there were some disadvantages. Firstly, the Maxis Fast Tap only allow the user to have the service using Nokia 6212 phone. This is inconvenience the user who has other phone model. Secondly, when the user lost the phone and there were some payment make by unauthorised person, who going to be responsible. This question had been arise past few years in credit card payment. Lastly, the service providers should always update the security system and cooperative with bank and Bank Negara Malaysia.

Phishing : Examples and its prevention methods

Phishing is attack technique where the attackers send an email or instant messaging declares to be from an existing financial institute or e-commerce provider. The email often uses fear tactics in an effort to attract the intended victim into a fraudulent website. The fraudulent website will look similar with the true website.

It will require the victim to login to their account, in addition to enter sensitive financial information such as their bank PIN number, credit card details, Social Security number and more. Normally, the email request the user to update their credit card information or else their account will be terminated. By other way, it will offer a service to protect their credit card from possible fraud. After that, the information that receives will sent to the attackers who then use it to create credit card and bank fraud.

By the way, it also create fraud where the phishing email will send to the user and tell him that he was won in a competition of lottery. It will need the winner to provide certain personal information in order to get the reward.

The following are some example of phishing.

To prevent the phishing website and email. There are several prevention software or some tips when receiving the phishing website.

If receive an email or pop-up message that ask for personal or financial information, do not reply it and click on the link that provided. The legal financial institutes or website will not ask their customer to provide any confidential information via Internet. Normally, the Internet criminal will not type the receiver's name, this due to they will send the phishing email in bulk. Be careful when email with some attachment or downloading files, it might contain viruses or phishing.

It will easy to determine the phishing email and website. As a user, we need to always alert where there are suspicious of any email with urgent requests for personal financial data. They will make you to feel it is urgent and important. A phishing email is to trick you into providing the information. If you feel you might to reply on it, you better call for your financial institute to ensure the genuine of the website.

It also can prevent by using anti-virus and anti-phishing software. However, it will more effective with the software is update frequently. Beside that, we should not email our personal information to anyone or fill up form in email messaging. If have to do so, make sure the website is secure, look the security look and URL for a website that begins with "https", the "s" stand for secure. Furthermore, always review credit card and bank account statement to check any unauthorized charge. If anything that you do not recognize transaction, contact your bank immediately. Lastly, remember to report phishing email or phishing website to the respective organization.

In my opinion, we should always alert on the phishing website and email. We should not provide our personal information to any people via Internet. We must always aware the URL of the website, to ensure it is secure. An E-commerce failure and its causes

Egghead.com was an example of the e-commerce failure. It was a computer software retail company which founded by Victor Alhadeff in 1984. However, due to competition from mass merchandisers had forced the company to re-evaluate its strategy. In 1998, the company focuses online business, closing its retail shop and selling through Egghead.com website. After re-strategy the business, the company decides to sell its products via Internet, phone and catalogue. In 2000, the Egghead merged with online auctioneer OnSale.com. However, the company was hurt by December 2000 exposure that hackers had accessed its systems and potentially concession customer credit card data. The company gets into bankruptcy in August 2001. After a deal to sell the company to Fry’s Electronics for $10 million and its assets were purchased by Amazon.com for $6.1 million.

The main cause the company got into bankruptcy was the credit card heist. In December 2000, that a cyber-criminal had broken into its systems and customers’ information might be disclosed to public. However, the CEO of the company declared that private information wasn’t stolen during the infiltrated. In truth, the hacker might steal the credit card detail of 3.6 million customers from the Egghead.com network. Moreover, near the Christmas season, the handling of the breach by publicly refuse that there was a problem, then notify by Visa Company, who in turn notified banks and customers that the credit, caused the breach to rise into a full blown scandal. There Creditcard.com confirmed that its security was compromise when credit card numbers were posted on the web. There were processes credit transactions for online companies and posted some credit card numbers after a failed blackmail attempt. The FBI has been investigation the incident and found that was mysterious charges of US$10 to US$18 have been made on some of the cards by a Moscow based firm.

Secondly, Egghead was suffered a deep decline in sales and forced the bankruptcy filing and assets sales. Although Egghead had PC software sales experience than others retailers, they were nevertheless out-resourced and taken over by the publicly traded giant Amozon.com. Egghead lost $4.7 million on $59 million in revenue. Although the net loss was improvement from the $17.7 million the company loss in the second quarter of 2000, Egghead’s revenue was down 53% from previous year and decrease 29% from the first quarter of 2001. Sales were not enough to cover up the loss, sustain the business from the competitors and the company went into bankruptcy.

In my opinion, the Egghead had give some guidance the company which wish to launch e-commerce. The main concern when a company launch e-commerce website is the website should be design well. So the user can do not worry during shop online especially how safe is their personal information.
